About the authors

Law in action: learning through scripted role plays was written by retired magistrate Alan Butcher, solicitor and law teacher Becky Parker and clinical legal education guru Richard Grimes – see below for more about the authors.

Alan Butcher JP (retired)
Alan was a full time trade union official. He sat as a magistrate at the Sheffield Magistrates’ Court for many years until his recent retirement and assisted the court with their Magistrates in the Community programme. He has wide experience of working with community-based groups on a variety of training programmes.

Richard Grimes LLB, MA, Solicitor
Richard was until recently Professor and Director of Pro Bono Services and Clinical Education at the College of Law. Previously he was a partner in a provincial solicitors firm. Richard has, for many years, combined legal practice with academic study, and is a firm believer in the power of learning by doing. Contact him on e-mail: richard.grimes@hotmail.co.uk.

Becky Parker RGN, LLB, Solicitor
Becky is Pro Bono Co-ordinator and supervising solicitor at the College of Law in Birmingham. She previously trained and worked as a nurse, and this experience contributed to her interest and commitment to ‘hands-on’ learning. Contact Becky on e-mail: rebecca.parker@lawcol.co.uk.
